Robert Siegelman
Robert Siegelman pursues two distinct media, printmaking and photography. As a printmaker, his work has moved from boldly toned, gestural monotypes to large and commanding diaphanously colored woodcut prints on rice paper. As a photographer, Siegelman first focused on Polaroid 20x24 work, commenting on the history of gay life in New England and using models to explore such aspects of sexuality as self-discovery, connection, loneliness, and vulnerability. He continues to examine these themes in his digital work, often combining multiple images. Sometimes the result is a juxtaposition from diverse contexts; sometimes, using exposures from a single sheet, a narrative is developed.
Siegelman's work is in the collections of the Boston Public Library, the Harvard University Art Museums, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and numerous private and corporate collections.

“My work asks questions about who is being photographed and what is being exposed. Is it a portrait of the model or the photographer? What is the balance of power and agency in these sessions, which frequently involve models who are younger, of different races, ethnicities and gender-identities. The images explore desire, intimacy, consent and the nature of being touched from a queer perspective.”
