“The Ireland pictures are inspired by the Irish folklore idea of ‘thin places’, a setting where heaven and earth come close to each other. A portal signifies a passage, a transformation from one place to another. In May 2023 I was an artist in residence at Cill Rialaig on the Ring of Kerry. The area is a magical place situated along the rugged coast of Ballinskelligs, an Irish speaking (Baile na Sceilge) part of the country. In this sublime setting, 18th century house ruins dot the hills and are surrounded by pastoral sheep and cow farms high above the Atlantic Ocean. These ruins provide an iconic house-shaped absence, of former inhabitants and contents long gone, against the insistence of nature reclaiming the space.” - Mary Kocol

Kocol's photography has received acclaim for its transformation of ordinary domestic and street scenes, located often in her resident Somerville, Massachusetts, into dramatic, richly colored compositions that convey an uncanny sense of both day and night. By photographing at dusk, with prolonged exposures, Kocol creates a melding of daytime and evening that transforms the mundane into the fantastic.
