Natural Witness: A Painter’s Pledge to See the World With His Own Two Eyes
Richard Raiselis paints in all seasons directly from life outdoors, or from a window high above the city. In a moment when we effortlessly record what we see with iphones, why would a visual artist reject the comforts of a warm studio for the uncertainties of winter weather? Or lug large canvases, paints, and easels to busy street corners, into buggy conservation land, or onto commuter trains to city centers?
Raiselis will address his choice to be a witness, to see the natural or constructed landscape with the immediacy of unfiltered looking. A painting is a statement—often taking months to complete—of the visible and invisible qualities of a place and a time.
Raiselis will show his work and speak about how and why he makes it. The artistic process can seem mysterious. As a painter and an educator, he is skilled at making art and explaining it.

Richard Raiselis is Associate Professor of Art at Boston University. He is a 2022-2023 Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellow in Painting, and is represented in New England by Gallery NAGA, Boston, where he had his seventh solo exhibition in 2022.
